This Mother's Day weekend, Newport locals have more than flowers and brunch to look forward to—Matriarch, the feminist gift shop and maker space owned by Amy Larson, is once again turning baked goods into community action.
Inspired by renowned fundraising initiatives like Bakers Against Racism and Natasha Pickowicz’s New York-based bake sales for Planned Parenthood, Amy is bringing the magic of socially conscious sugar to Aquidneck Island. “Everyone needs to eat, and many of us want to give back but don’t know how,” she explains. “Bake sales are the perfect way to bridge those two needs in a delicious fashion.”
Amy’s passion for social impact is woven into the very foundation of Matriarch. Since opening in 2017, 10% of profits from her popular Smash the Garlic collection have gone to Planned Parenthood, and other product lines support nonprofits uplifting women and marginalized communities. “Giving back is a core belief of my business,” she says. “I'm always looking for more ways to extend my impact.”
This upcoming bake sale—set for Saturday, May 10th—will benefit Moms Demand Action, a national grassroots movement advocating for stronger gun laws and safety measures. “Since it’s the day before Mother's Day, this felt like the perfect organization to support,” Amy notes. “They’re a group of parents and citizens tirelessly fighting for common sense gun reform. I’m really excited to give back to this group!”
On the menu? A mouthwatering spread of Orange Blossom Cupcakes, Salted Chocolate Chip Cookies, Madeleines, Coconut Cakes, plus a variety of gluten-free and vegan delights. Amy has rallied a “very talented group of professional and home bakers” for the event, ensuring the table will be as inclusive as it is irresistible.
Her advice for others looking to make a difference: start small, start local, and don’t go it alone. “You could organize a sidewalk or park cleanup, a food drive, or your own bake sale. The possibilities are endless,” she says. “It’s so much more impactful when we work together.”
If you're looking for a way to give back this spring—and treat yourself in the process—stop by Matriarch on May 10th. Every bite makes a difference.
